Frequently Asked Questions about the Library

1. How to become a patron of the AUCA Library?

An individual can be registered in the library after the presentation of any identification document or:

А) AUCA students are registered on the basis of the list attached to enrolment order provided by AUCA Registrar Office after a student fulfills library registration form,

B) Staff and faculty (full-timer) are registered on the basis of hiring order from Human Resources Department, 

C) Faculty (part-timer) are registered on the basis of hiring order from Human Resources Department and guarantee letter from the program head,

D) Representatives of other organizations and institutions who have signed contracts with AUCA possess the right to use library collections on the basis of library deposit provision and by means of contracts on informational services provision.

 

2. What kinds and formats of information resources are accessible in the library and where they are?

3. Where to sign a certificate?

Certificate signs on two circulation desks - a room 101 "East Hall" and a room 105 "West Hall" (the signature of both circulation desks is obligatory).

 

4. How I can check my library account?

All students and faculty registered in AUCA local network can check their library account from any computer connected to the Internet using individual login/password and number of library card. This service is available from Library's web-site at http://library.auca.kg/ru/authentication/.

 

5. How to prolong period of using the literature?

Reference literature, literature in a single exemplar and literature from "Core Collection" is loaned for the period from 1 to 3 days. Patron has an opportunity to prolong the loan period by phone if the literature is not in demand among other patrons but only up twice. Basic textbooks that are available in the sufficient amount can be prolonged for all semester. Library imposes fines for breaking the procedures of books loaning of the AUCA Order №216 from November 3, 2000.

 

6. Why some books check out only in a reading hall?

The book checks out in a reading hall if in the library there is only one copy or there is last copy of a book.

 

7. How to use Electronic Catalog?

You can get consultation on using electronic catalog at a duty librarian on circulation desk ("East & West Hall"), and also you can read guide "Electronic catalog. Information resources & search strategy".

 

8. How I get to know about of the certain book in the library?

You should to use Electronic Catalog, you can lead search by author, by title or by a word from the title of the book, by keywords.

 

9. What is the Library of Congress Classification?

A classification system developed by the Library of Congress (LC) that is used to organize the collections of many academic and research libraries. This alpha-numeric system arranges materials by subject. Each subject or class is represented by a series of letters and numbers, which are used to create an LC call number. It is based on letters of the alphabet with subdivisions using letters, numerals and decimal. A library can add an author, code, date, copy number, etc. to the classification number to create a unique call number for each title.

 

10. What is Call Number?

Call Number a combination of letters and numbers in the location field of each record in the library catalog, and on the spine or cover of each book. This number is used for determining the location of an item within the library.

 

11.   I have lost a library book, what should I do?

In accordance with the library rules (i.4.15.), if a patron loses a library item he/she will be obligated replace or pay three times the price of the original copy for lost items or, replace with latest (revised) edition/version of the original copy or other material, the importance of which to be approved by the acquisition librarian.

 

12.   I have lost a library card, what should I do?

You should to give notice of a duty librarian on circulation desk a room 101 "East Hall" or a room 105 "West Hall", and to ask to block your library card. Also, for the first time a patron pays a fine in the amount of 25 soms. If the card was lost for the second time, in that case the fine will comprise 200 soms (library rules i.3.4.).

 

13. How to restore a library card or to replace on new?

You should to come a room 101 "East Hall" and fulfills library registration form (the photo is obligatory).

 

14. What to do if book is not on the shelf?

Specify call number of the book in electronic catalog, check up the status of the book - probably it is check out, ask for the help to a duty librarian.

 

15. How many books may I borrow?

Depending on category users has limitations for the amount of books:

12 items

for full time students

8 items

for part time students and students from preparatory

2 items

for AUCA Alumni

20 items

for AUCA full time faculty

10 items

for AUCA part time faculty

5 items

for AUCA staff

 

16.   How can I check other Libraries' catalogs?

Use a site of Unit Catalog of Kyrgyzstan - http://www.uc.net.kg/index.html   

The Unit Catalog gives access to a bibliographic database of libraries of Kyrgyzstan. At present in the catalog keeping books and the annotated bibliographic database of articles of periodicals Kyrgyzstan.
